Whether you are swapping on a new cassette, changing your rear wheel, or doing a little periodic maintenance to your bike, you need to be able to remove your cassette. In the past, that’s meant reaching for a chain whip, cassette lockring remover, and an adjustable wrench. While this multi-tool, two-handed method is adequate, there is now a more manageable, more streamlined way.
The new, dual-sided PRO Cassette Wrench is a clean, secure cassette removal solution compatible with 10-and 11-tooth cogs for versatility across both road and mountain bike cassettes. Notches on each side of the wrench seamlessly slot into the smallest cog, providing grip when loosening a cassette from your wheel’s freehub body.
“It’s a really good tool for that home mechanic who is taking the next step in maintaining their bike,” explains Chris Jacobson, Brand Manager for PRO North America. “The PRO Cassette Wrench makes it easier to remove, inspect, and clean your cassette. It’s also great for that rider who wants to frequently change cassettes so they can experiment with different gear ratios or swap wheels, say one for climbing and one for riding the flats.”
Notable features of the PRO Cassette Wrench include a 13-inch (330mm) long handle with a rubber grip, which provides a secure grip and ample leverage. This is especially handy for new bikes that often come with a cassette initially torqued to a potentially knuckle-busting 40Nm. Additionally, the wrench’s retention pins have relief zones and ridges on the outside, providing the cassette cogs a secure surface to dig into so the tool won’t slip when you apply loading force.
“There’s also no guessing on orientation like you have with a chain whip,” added Jacobson. “Choose the right side of the wrench, which is clearly labeled for 10-or 11-tooth cogs. Place the appropriate side directly facing the cassette. Then loosen and remove the cassette. There’s no contact with the chain, so it’s a really clean and simple procedure.”
